MASTERCLASS: Realism in Oils

An intensive introduction into academic art in the tradition of L’Académie des beaux-arts
 and modern schools of realism. All lessons focus heavily on techniques needed for expertise in realist expression.

The student will learn:

Learn the use of Limited and Grisaille oil palettes while obtaining knowledge about colour theory;
Manipulate proportions through juxtaposition, line quality and how they can be best applied for realistic illusion;
Discover the 20th-century classical way of painting style and philosophy, combining elements of 19th-century neoclassicism and realism.
Intuitively learn how to Observe Objectively from nature-based Primary subjects (not from 2-D photo representations) for Realistic rendering in Drawing and Painting;
Develop strong confidence drawing and painting Still-Life subjects and figure from Life, using the sophisticated medium of oils;

One-on-one artistic critique is provided all throughout the course from a professional Classical Realism artist.

Meet the Tutor


Karl Froman, is a Swedish professional Realism artist who immersed himself in Classical Realism for the major part of academic career at the Florence Academy of Art. His breathtaking marvels speak out for themselves. You can sneak through some of his works in the featured photos.

Karl, has been studying Art from a very young age in several countries and under many master painters, most prominently at the University of Arts in Florence. Karl has been involved in several exhibitions, hosted lectures, lessons and designed courses. Many of his works can be found in private collections in Australia, France, Sweden, Norway, America, England, Malta and China.
